NIGC announces 5-Year strategic plan

WASHINGTON, DC -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Today the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) released its five-year strategic plan, in accordance with the Government Performance Results Act (GPRA) of 1993. This act provides for the establishment of strategic planning and performance measurement in federal agencies.

Two years ago, when the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) was amended by Congress to change the manner in which the National Indian Gaming Commission is funded, Congress added a provision that requires the NIGC to comply with the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA).

GPRA includes three primary elements. First, a federal agency must develop a five-year strategic plan, which sets out goals and objectives for the agency. Second, the agency must prepare an annual performance plan. Third and finally, the agency must publish an annual performance report. Our present efforts are focused on the first element.

Before finalizing its strategic plan, the Commission invites input and comments on the plan from Tribes, national and regional Indian gaming associations and Congress. The comment period will close on October 31, 2008.

The NIGC is an independent regulatory agency established within the Department of the Interior pursuant to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988.
