Adams wins Inaugural Super High Roller Bowl Australia

3 February 2020

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Canadian Timothy Adams has defeated the 16-entrant field to win the inaugural AU$250,000 Super High Roller Bowl Australia held in partnership with the World Poker Tour at The Star - Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.

Following a gruelling three-hour heads-up battle, Adams defeated Australian Kahle Burns to be crowned the ninth champion in Super High Roller Bowl history joining the likes of Brian Rast, Rainer Kempe, Christoph Vogelsang, Isaac Haxton, Cary Katz, Daniel Dvoress, and Justin Bonomo twice.

"There is a ton of prestige to winning a tournament like this," Adams said. "It makes it extra nice and I'm really pleased right now."

Adams has been a regular on the high roller circuit for multiple years, and his lifetime tournament earnings now sit at over $20.6 million which moves him to 26th on the All-Time Money List.

The list of accomplishments for Adams sees the Canadian hold several high roller victories including a first-place finish in the HK$2 million Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Jeju Main Event for HK$27,760,500 (approximately $3.54 million), along with a 2012 WSOP bracelet in the Event #28: $2,500 Four-Handed for $392,476. On this trip to Australia, Adams added a win in Australian Poker Open Event #5: AU$25,000 No-Limit Hold’em for AU$416,500, and now the Super High Roller Bowl Australia victory for AU$2,160,000.

"This one feels really special," Adams said about becoming a Super High Roller Bowl champion. "The buy-in is very big and the field is very tough. There were a lot of elite players in the field, and yeah it was a small field, but winning any tournament always feels great especially when you beat tough competition. It's extra satisfying."

Final Table Action Recap
With Day 1 action of the inaugural Super High Roller Bowl Australia seeing the 16-entrant field reduced down to the final five players, those players returned to The Star Gold Coast poker room to battle it out under the bright lights of the PokerGO feature table.

Elio Fox held a commanding lead with roughly a third of the chips in play. But unfortunately for Fox, things wouldn’t go his way once play resumed. Fox lost a big pot to local favorite Kahle Burns to start the proceedings after which he was eliminated by Burns in fifth place. On Fox’s final hand, he was facing a shove by Burns on the river with four straight cards on the board, and the American pro ultimately called with his set only to see Burns table a winning straight.

On the money bubble, Aaron Van Blarcum was the short stack and he busted to Burns as well and entering three-handed play each player was guaranteed AU$640,000. Burns held the chip lead with 2.5 million to Adams’ 1.1 million, and Super High Roller Bowl London champion Katz’s 386,000. Katz managed to find a double with pocket sevens against Burns’ king-queen, but Katz’s fight would end in third place when he called off his 11 big blind stack with king-deuce from the big blind to be ahead of Adams’ ten-eight from the small blind. The window card was a ten, and although Katz turned a gutshot to go along with his king-outs, he would eventually be eliminated in third place.

Burns entered heads-up play with 2.9 million in chips to Adams’ 1.1 million, but immediately it would be Adams closing the gap after which a three-hour battle ensued with the Canadian coming out on top. On the final hand, Adams held ace-nine suited against Burns’ queen-jack, of the same suit, and the former’s hand held up.

The Star Gold Coast COO Jessica Mellor was excited about the final table being a close game involving plenty of clever manoeuvres.

“At this high calibre playing level, we are seeing an exciting build-up of suspense as the world’s finest players go up against each other,” Ms Mellor said.

“A big congratulations to Timothy Adams for coming out on top today and winning the inaugural Super High Roller Bowl Australia.

“We’re continuing to bring the biggest events to the Gold Coast and we are thrilled with our partnership with World Poker Tour and Poker Central to host these two globally-recognised poker tournaments at The Star Gold Coast.”
