Casino City's Friday Five: Las Vegas resorts and sports edition

17 December 2021

This week’s news has Las Vegas written all over it. The top story comes from the Las Vegas Strip as the operations of The Mirage is being sold by MGM Resorts International to Hard Rock International.

Before we get into those details and future plans, we have San Manuel Gaming officially becoming owners of The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas with the intention of re-opening the resort back up in the spring of 2022. We also have the 2024 Super Bowl coming to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, a new casino coming to Illinois and major changes to a casino in Pittsburgh.

Let’s start this off with some news from The Prairie State:

5. Full House Resorts chosen to build a casino in Waukegan
On Monday, Full House Resorts announced that its American Place gaming and entertainment destination proposal was selected today by the Illinois Gaming Board.

American Place was originally one of five proposals submitted in response to a “request for proposals” to develop and operate a new casino and entertainment destination in Waukegan, Illinois.

“We thank the Illinois Gaming Board for their confidence in Full House Resorts and for selecting our American Place proposal,” said Daniel R. Lee, President and Chief Executive Officer of Full House Resorts. “We will begin working immediately on American Place, first with the development and construction of a temporary casino in Waukegan, Illinois. Through our planned temporary facility – aptly named The Temporary by American Place – we will be able to quickly create jobs and generate tax revenues while the permanent American Place facility is being built. We expect to open our temporary facility in mid-2022.”

4. Live! Casino Pittsburgh making big changes after one year
Earlier this week, Live! Casino Pittsburgh provided a first look at exciting new additions and upgrades to the casino's gaming, entertainment and dining offerings.

The latest investments to the entertainment facility include a new Poker Room, new Event Center, new FanDuel FanCave, reconfigured High-Limit Room and new electronic gaming tables. Live! Casino's premier restaurants also are debuting several new menu items.

Below is a breakdown of the expansions and upgrades to the casino and entertainment facility:

Poker Room – Live! Casino has transformed the original banquet room on the second floor into a designated Poker Room. The nearly 1,500 square-foot room has been remodeled and will have seven new table games. The Poker Room is expected to open 20 December.

Event Center – Live! Casino will be opening a new Event Center on the second floor of the entertainment facility. The 7,000 square-foot room will be used for weddings, private parties and special events, including entertainment acts. Live! expects to invest additional capital to enhance the facility in 2022.

FanDuel FanCave – The FanDuel FanCave is located on the second floor of the casino, adjacent to Sports & Social. The area previously included foosball tables, darts and FanDuel Sportsbook terminals. The transformed 826-square-foot space still offers the betting terminals, but now serves as a luxurious sports watching lounge with 13 leather recliners and a 173” HD TV. The FanCave is open to walk in guests to enjoy a game, or can be reserved for fantasy drafts, watch parties, meetings or special events.

High-Limit Room – Live! Casino reconfigured the High-Limit Room to include 18 additional slot machines.

Electronic Gaming Tables – Live! Casino will install 20 new EGTs that will be operational by 23 December. Casino guests can play Roulette and Blackjack on these electronic terminals with a live dealer. Fourteen of the EGTs will be located outside the main casino bar and six inside the main casino bar.

New Menu Items – Live! Casino’s two on-site restaurants, Sports & Social Steel City and Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen + Bar are keeping their menus fresh with new offerings starting in December.

3. Las Vegas to host Super Bowl LVIII
Slated for 11 February 2024, the Super Bowl will take place at the recently opened Allegiant Stadium and marks the first time Las Vegas and the state of Nevada will welcome the Super Bowl.

“Being named a Super Bowl host city is a defining moment in the history of Las Vegas,” said Steve Hill, CEO and president of the LVCVA. “An event of this magnitude combined with the energy of Las Vegas is going to be unmatched. Our entire city is committed to making Super Bowl LVIII the most electrifying sports spectacle ever. The NFL has been an incredible partner, and we look forward to working with their team, the Host Committee and our partners across our destination to showcase Las Vegas as ‘The Greatest Arena on Earth’.”

In addition to hosting Super Bowl LVIII, Las Vegas is home to the upcoming 2022 NFL Pro Bowl presented by Verizon and the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Las Vegas Raiders were invited by the National Football League to collaborate on a bid to host Super Bowl LVIII. After a nearly one-year process, the bid was presented to and approved by the 32 clubs on Wednesday in Dallas.

2. San Manuel Gaming to bring back The Palms Casino Resort
The San Manuel Gaming and Hospitality Authority, an affiliate of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, announced it received approval from the Nevada Gaming Commission as licensees for The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

With this approval, SMGHA Nevada, LLC, owned by SMGHA, is set to close the transaction and become owners of Palms Casino Resort with plans to reopen next year in the spring.

In addition to the casino, Palms includes more than 700 hotel rooms and suites, multiple casual and upscale dining options, meeting and convention space, a 2,500-seat theater, pool and spa, and Palms Place condominiums.

Within days of the close of the deal, guests can make reservations at Palms Place at www.palms.com. Room reservations for Palms Casino Resort will be available in early 2022.

1. Hard Rock making return to Las Vegas
On Tuesday, MGM Resorts International announced it has reached an agreement to sell the operations of The Mirage Hotel & Casino to Hard Rock International for $1.075 billion.

Hard Rock used to have a casino resort located off The Strip. It used to be where the current Virgin Hotels Las Vegas resort now stands.

The Mirage opened in 1989 and was acquired by MGM Resorts in 2000. The iconic property, located at the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, is known worldwide for its 90-foot Strip-side volcano, as well as for its dynamic entertainment options.

Under the terms of the agreement, MGM Resorts will retain The Mirage name and brand, licensing it to Hard Rock royalty-free for a maximum period of three years while it finalizes its plans to rebrand the property.

The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2022.

Hard Rock International has plans to build a guitar-shaped casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip.
