Casino City’s Friday Five: Slot machine edition

15 March 2019

Everyone loves payday. It would be nice if said pay could be seven figures, or even higher, but that isn’t the case for most of us. However, several slot machine players this week were lucky enough to come away with payouts of that caliber. This week, we look at some massive jackpot wins, slot machines being delivered to a new casino, mobile sports betting making progress in Rhode Island and yet another new sportsbook opening in the U.S. Let’s kick it off with some newly minted millionaires: 5. €4.3 million jackpot on Mega Fortune Dreams What if I told you that you could turn €4 into €4 million? You would probably think I'm either crazy or a telemarketer. However, that is exactly what a 65-year-old woman playing at Betsson Casino & Live Casino did. The woman placed €4 on a round of spins on NetEnt’s Mega Fortune Dreams and ending up hitting the largest jackpot for NetEnt in 2019 at €4,333,667.97. “We are thrilled to announce the latest jumbo jackpot winner on Mega Fortune Dreams,” said Henrik Fagerlund, Managing Director, NetEnt Malta. “Players know that the game is proven to pay out the biggest prizes – just as this €4.3 million windfall shows – and we are delighted for the latest recipient of a life-changing sum.” 4. Mega Moolah jackpot hits twice in two days When a massive jackpot hits on a slot game, you don’t often see it coming up with another major win in the near future, let alone the very next day. On Tuesday 5 March, a €11,546,388.15 jackpot was hit, followed by a €2,201,120.31 jackpot win on Wednesday 6 March. The €11.5 million payout is the fourth largest on Microgaming’s progressive jackpot network, following the €13,328,028.16 win earlier this year, the €18,915,872.81 paid in September 2018, and the €17,879,645.12 that earned Microgaming a Guinness World Records title in 2015. Remarkably, the €2.2 million win was triggered within 33 bets of the player registering with the casino that day. 3. First slot machines arrive at Harrah’s Northern California Aristocrat Technologies loaded 246 new slot machines into the Northern California development early Wednesday including Lightning Link, Buffalo Gold and Dragon Link. In addition to new machines and games, Harrah’s Northern California guests will benefit from the many advantages and perks of the casino’s affiliation with Caesars Entertainment when it opens this spring. These benefits include Caesars Rewards member privileges and preferred access to Caesars’ Rewards and amenities at locations around the world. 2. Rhode Island General Assembly votes to allow mobile sports wagering On Tuesday, the Rhode Island General Assembly approved legislation introduced by Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) and Speaker of the House Nicholas A. Mattiello (D-Dist. 15, Cranston) that would allow mobile sports wagering through Twin River Casino and Tiverton Casino Hotel. Both of the Granite State casinos introduced sports betting at their venues late last year. This legislation, which now moves to the governor's office, would allow players to use an app to access sports betting offerings at Twin River Casino and Tiverton Casino Hotel as long as they are in the state. Using technology to determine a player’s location, the system would not accept any wagers that are attempted to be placed outside of Rhode Island. The State of Rhode Island would continue to receive 51% of all winnings from sports wagering, among the highest rates in the country. “This revenue, along with the revenue we anticipate from an expansion to mobile gaming is a tremendous benefit to the state,” said Speaker Mattiello. “It’s an added benefit that we can capture revenue that would have otherwise gone to an illegal market. When you consider that up to 97% of sports wagering is done illegally, it makes good sense for the state to increase its revenue by providing an entertainment that can be done safely and legally.” 1. FanDuel Sportsbook to open at Valley Forge Casino It is a pretty good time to be opening a new sportsbook with March Madness tipping off in just four days. Valley Forge Casino Resort celebrated the grand opening of its new FanDuel Sportsbook on Wednesday, becoming the first FanDuel Sportsbook in Pennsylvania. The new 1,800 square foot sports betting retail location will be conveniently located near the main entrance of the casino. “Opening the FanDuel Sportsbook at Valley Forge Casino Resort is the start of FanDuel Group’s retail sports betting expansion in partnership with Boyd Gaming,” said Matt King, CEO, FanDuel Group. “Our experience operating the top sportsbook in New Jersey at the Meadowlands Racetrack will serve us well as we enter Philadelphia and compete for customers in an area with some of the most passionate and knowledgeable sports fans.” The FanDuel Sportsbook will feature seven teller windows, 29 video displays (televisions and odds screens), two sports tickers and seating for more than 30 customers. Former Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek placed the first bet at the sportsbook. The bet was $20 on Bryce Harper hitting more than 33 homeruns for the Phillies this season.
