Chase begins for WSOP records

1 June 2007

The 2007 World Series of Poker begins today with the first two events in a 55-bracelet tournament schedule. First on the list are the $500 employees-only event and the $5,000 Mixed Hold'em World Championship. Mixed Hold'em combines limit and no-limit action.

The World Championship designator is being showcased for the first time at the WSOP. It signifies the highest buy-in event per game type. There will be thirteen World Championships overall, concluding with the Main Event being held July 6-17.

"Over the next 47 days, the global poker community will gather at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to compete for the richest prize pool in sports, showcase their talents and rub elbows with some of the biggest names in poker, sports and show business," WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack said. "All will be competing for the highly coveted and cherished World Series of Poker bracelet."

As the WSOP has grown in popularity, so have the playing records. The most prestigious is the "bracelets-won" record, set at 10 by Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth.

Hellmuth tied the record in 2006, one year after Brunson and Chan won their tenth bracelets. All three are expected to play extensively in 2007, and given the distance between them and their closest competitors, only they have a real shot at setting a new record.

Top Six in Bracelets Won

1.) Brunson, Chan, and Hellmuth - 10
4.) Johnny Moss (Hall of Fame, First Main Event Winner, deceased) - 8
5.) Billy Baxter - 7
5.) Erik Seidel - 7
7.) Jay Heimowitz - 6
7.) Men "The Master" Nguyen - 6
7.) TJ Cloutier – 6

In addition to tying the all-time bracelet mark in 2006, Hellmuth also set a new standard for WSOP cashes with 57.

Top Five in WSOP Cashes

1.) Phil Hellmuth – 57
2.) Men "The Master" Nguyen – 54
3.) T.J. Cloutier - 51
4.) Berry Johnston - 50
5.) Brent Carter – 45
5.) Chris "Jesus" Ferguson - 45
5.) Humberto Brenes – 45

Hellmuth said in a recent blog entry that he's excited for this year's WSOP, the first time he's felt that way "in quite some time." He also wrote that he wants to become the "record man," holding all of the major WSOP records by the time his playing days are over. Barely in his forties, Hellmuth already holds two records, and is second in final table appearances.

Top Five in WSOP Final Table Appearances

1.) T.J. Cloutier – 39
2.) Phil Hellmuth – 37
3.) Berry Johnston – 29
4.) Johnny Chan – 26
4.) Chris "Jesus" Ferguson – 26
4.) Erik Seidel – 26

The WSOP Money Earned mark matters little to all but the casual poker fan. The all-time money list is skewed towards recent Main-Event-final-table finishers, with the explosion of entrants in the last three WSOP tournaments. Names like Jamie Gold and Paul Wasicka appear in the Top-Five, despite having one bracelet and four cashes between them. Hall of Fame players like Cloutier, Brunson, Chan and Moss all rank below 2005 Main Event second-place finisher Steve Dannemann.

Top Five in WSOP Money Earned

1.) Jamie Gold - $12 million
2.) Joe Hachem - $7.89 million
3.) Paul Wasicka - $6.16 million
4.) Allen Cunningham - $5.99 million
5.) Greg "Fossilman" Raymer - $5.43 million
