David Baker defeats Hellmuth and Ivey to win WSOP $10,000 buy-in HORSE event

19 June 2012

Phil Hellmuth Jr. was seeking his 13th World Series of Poker individual event championship bracelet.

Phil Ivey was seeking his ninth bracelet and first since 2010.

When the pair ended up at the final table of the $10,000 buy-in HORSE event at the Rio on Monday, one figured to achieve his goal.

In the end, it was David Baker a 25-year-old professional poker player from Las Vegas, who won the event — which featured alternating rounds of five poker variations.

Baker collected $451,779 for first place, which gave him close to $1.5 million in career earnings. The win also earned him his second gold bracelet, following a win two years ago in the $10,000 buy-in Deuce-to-Seven Lowball World Championship. Baker started playing poker seriously while in college.

Six of the nine final table players at the final table were former gold bracelet winners, topped by Hellmuth and Ivey.

Ivey finished fifth and earned $99,739. The event marked Ivey’s fourth final table at this year’s World Series of Poker and kept him at the top of the standings for tournament’s Player of the Year rankings.

On Twitter, Ivey posted; “Made it to a 4th final table, came up short, but there's plenty of time left in the #WSOP. GL to the remaining players –PI.”

Ivey immediately jumped into play in another World Series of Poker event.

Hellmuth earned $134,056 for fourth place and cashed in his record-setting 90th World Series of Poker event. Hellmuth won his 12th bracelet on June 8, breaking a four-year drought in between bracelets.

On Twitter, Hellmuth said; “Finished in fourth place, too bad, I am happy w my play...Wanted to win so so badly for my Mom on her Bday!!”
