Flash floods, leaking water in the Rio cause a stir on Day 1B

7 July 2015

LAS VEGAS – Tournament officials paused play with nine minutes remaining in the third level of Day 1B of the World Series of Poker Main Event on Monday night, as water leaked through the ceiling onto a number of tables in the Brasilia Room at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

The Las Vegas area received a torrential downpour of rain Monday evening, leading to flooding in the streets. The rain even made its way inside the Rio’s doors and affected play at the WSOP Main Event, if only briefly. Players were sent to dinner break nine minutes ahead of schedule on Day 1B, and when they returned, the tables in the corner of the Brasilia Room affected by the leakage were closed off.

A total of 1,716 players entered the Main Event on Day 1B, adding to the 741 entrants on Day 1A. Both of those figures are down from last year's pace, as Days 1A and 1B in 2014 saw 771 and 2,144 players, respectively.

By the end of Day 1B, 1,154 players had survived and will join the 480 players who made it through Day 1A on Wednesday in Day 2A.

Leading the field at the conclusion of Monday night was Iowa native Hamid Feliz, who bagged 182,675 chips.

Brian Hastings, seeking his third WSOP bracelet of 2015, got off to a great start in the Main Event by taking 87,550 chips into Day 2A.

Brian Rast, fresh off his $7.5 million win in the $500,000 Aria Super High Roller over the weekend, finished the day with an impressive 88,825 chips.

Other notable players to make it through Day 1B with impressive stacks include Matt Salsberg (113,025), three-time bracelet winner Dominik Nitsche (128,725), 2014 WSOP Player of the Year and three-time bracelet winner George Danzer (96,300), 2004 Main Event champion Greg Raymer (92,200) and three-time bracelet winner Jason Mercier (66,325).

Day 1B was not so kind to high-stakes pro Galen Hall, who busted with just 15 minutes left in the day. Other well-known pros to bust Monday night included Scott Seiver, Bernard Lee, Ben Lamb, Shaun Deeb, Dan Smith, Robert Mizrachi and Jonathan Little.

Day 1C begins Tuesday at noon, and its field size will largely determine the total field for the 2015 Main Event. Last year's Day 1C had 3,768 players, boosting the 2014 field to a total of 6,683 players. In order for the 2015 field to match last year's size, 4,226 players will need to register by the dinner break Tuesday night.
