Miles dashes Cada's bid for second WSOP Main Event crown

13 July 2018

LAS VEGAS -- By maneuvering through the second-largest World Series of Poker Main Event field in history and making it to a second final table, Joe Cada was on the precipice of etching his name even further in the poker history books when he arrived at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino on Friday night. He already became just the second player to win a WSOP Main Event and return to the final table (Daniel Harrington, 2004), but a win would have made him just the fifth player in history to win multiple Main Events (Stu Ungar, Johnny Moss, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan) He also would have soared from 60th on the all-time money winning list to 18 at the age of just 30 years old. Cada’s bid to join that elite class fell short on Friday night when his all-in call with pocket 10s got out-flopped by Miles’ A-K: A king hit the board, sending Cada to the rail in fifth place, which earned him $2.15 million. Cada, who became the youngest player to win the WSOP Main Event back in 2009 when he was 21 years old, uncharacteristically skipped out of his bustout interview with ESPN and other reporters and quickly made a stage-left exit out of the Amazon Room with a group of friends. When we caught up with him in the hallway, he told us he wasn’t about to complain. “Sometimes you win flips. Sometimes you lose,” the 30-year-old said calmly in between posing for pictures with fans. “I ran good (at the final table in 2009). Today it was my turn to lose a flip.” As for his chance to make history, Cada scoffed at the idea that his exit was more painful than anyone else's. “Yes, I had a lot at stake. It would have been cool to be able to win it again,” he said. “But everyone had something big at stake. I wasn’t the only one.”
