This Week in Gambling: Online poker thefts and Resorts World Las Vegas robbery

30 November 2022

This week's gambling news is about robberies of two different kinds. First J. Todd covers the theft of tens of thousands of dollars from online poker players as a result of a security breach at Global Payments Gaming Solutions. Then he talks about how a guy robbed the high-roller cage at Resorts World Las Vegas.

Online Poker Theft

Poker players at the WSOP.com, BetMGM, and other popular websites who have used the services of Global Payments Gaming Solutions should check their bank statements immediately. It seems there is a vulnerability in the company’s VIP Preferred service that has already cost some players tens of thousands of dollars in these online poker thefts. The VIP Preferred service allows players to store information for multiple checking accounts, and to deposit up to $50,000 to poker sites over a seven-day period. And while Global Payments requires an identity verification to make an initial deposit, that does not seem to be the case for another deposit made to a different poker site. Fraudsters used this to their advantage, created new accounts on different poker sites to make large deposits into those new accounts from players banks.

Resorts World Las Vegas Robbery

Recently, one man decided to rob the high roller cash cage at Resorts World Las Vegas at 2 a.m. on a weekday. Then topped it all off by getting away in a cab. If all of this has you a bit perplexed, you’re not alone. Many people on social media were asking how such a feat could take place. Where was security? How could he walk through the casino unnoticed? How could he have a taxi waiting as a getaway driver? It may be a mystery that goes unsolved, as the folks at Resorts World did not say much. Neither did police detectives until the arrest of Zubaid Al Jarmi. He's been charged with the Resorts World robbery with a deadly weapon, burglary, and possession of a deadly weapon. The judge subsequently decided to hold the defendant without bail, which was probably the wise thing to do. And wait till you hear about his criminal record.
